About Jersey

Grosnez Castle

Milestones

250,000 BC

Jersey's earliest residents were palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) hunter gatherers who lived in caves. The Island's many standing stones and burial chambers date from neolithic (New Stone Age) times c.4000 BC.

6000 BC Jersey became an island after splitting from the Normandy peninsula.
6th Century Germanic Raiders unwittingly put Jersey on the Christian map when they murdered the hermit St Helier, who lived and preached on a small rocky islet near what is now Elizabeth Castle.
9th Century Vikings settled on the mainland and the islands, giving Jersey its name. Then came the Normans.
933 AD Jersey was annexed to the Duchy of Normandy as William Longsword wins the Channel Islands.
1066 The Channel Islands became part of the Anglo-Norman realm when William the Conqueror gained the English crown from Harold at Hastings.
1204 Jersey was part of the Norman world for nearly three centuries, until 1204. Following the fall of Rouen, islanders faced a dilemma: stay loyal to John, King of England and Duke of Normandy, or switch allegiance to Phillippe Auguste of France. The decision to remain loyal to King John triggered a special relationship with the English crown, resulting in the unique culture and constitution Jersey enjoys today.
1337 The Hundred Year War begins between England and France. France invades the Islands a number of times.
1461 - 1468 During the War of the Roses, the French seized Mont Orgueil Castle and ruled Jersey for seven years.
1565 Helier de Carteret colonizes Sark, setting up a feudal system which has remained in operation to this day.

1852 Victor Hugo begins his exile on the islands, three years in Jersey and then 15 years in Guernsey.
1902 The Battle of Flowers was first held in Jersey to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII.
1912 The World's first International Air Race - St Malo to Jersey and back.
1940 - 1945 World War Two - The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to be occupied by German forces when the British Government chose not to defend them. Liberation from five years of occupation came to a starving and oppressed population on 9 May 1945, an event celebrated annually with Liberation Day.
1962 The beginning of the Finance Industry
1981 The Detective series 'Bergerac' airs for the first time.
