Jèrriais is the form of the Norman language spoken in Jersey. It has been in decline over the past century as English has increasingly become the language of education, commerce and administration. There are very few people who speak Jèrriais as a mother tongue and, owing to the age of the remaining speakers, their numbers decrease annually. Despite this, efforts are being made to keep the language alive and around 3% of the population speak the language.

Jèrriais is often called "Jersey French" or "Jersey Norman French" by English-speakers (though this may give the mistaken impression that the language is a dialect of French) and "jersiais" or "normand de Jersey" by French-speakers. Care should be taken to distinguish between Jèrriais and the Jersey Legal French used for legal contracts, laws and official documents by the government and administration of Jersey. For this reason, some prefer using the term "Jersey Norman" to avoid ambiguity and to disassociate the language from standard French.

What is Jèrriais?

It is the old language of Jersey which is closely related to French. According to the 1989 census there were 5,720 people who spoke Jèrriais. We have about two hundred children learning Jèrriais in our schools.

You are most likely to hear Jèrriais spoken in the countryside or perhaps occasionally in town in the market. There is a weekly programme on BBC Radio Jersey 88.8FM/1026AM on Sunday morning at around 7.15 am as well as a fortnightly programme on alternate Friday evenings at 6.05 pm. Fortnightly articles with English translation appear in the Jersey Evening Post, as well as a daily proverb.
