Amici Artium Concert Series

What have a youthful English string quartet, two leading international concert pianists from Russian and Italy, and classical music’s top blogging performer got in common with each other?

Answer: you can hear them all in Jersey between October 2011 and May 2012 in the Amici Artium classical music series at the Jersey Arts Centre in St Helier.

The centre, with its intimate 250-seat auditorium, is quite a draw for some of the world’s leading musicians, and the organisers are delighted with their new season which opens on 13 October with a concert by the prize-winning Doric String Quartet.

Many of the performers like Italian pianist Alessandro Taverna - who appears on 1 December – are more often heard in the larger halls of the world’s musical capitals but they come to Jersey because of its unusually appreciative audience who relish seeing and hearing great musicians close at hand.

Three of the most sought-after pianists in the world appear in 2012 – Yevgeny Sudbin, Stephen Hough and Paul Lewis. Yevgeny Sudbin has been delighting audiences across the world with his thrilling performances, particularly of music from the Russian Romantic repertoire, while Paul Lewis was seen at the Proms last year and in televised broadcasts playing all the Beethoven concertos.

A regular visitor to the Arts Centre over the years has been Stephen Hough, equally well-known in the USA. He produced the pianistic equivalent of an extra string to his bow when he launched a blog from the Daily Telegraph website which has become one of the most popular ways for music enthusiasts to communicate electronically.

The 2011-12 Amici Artium series is completed with a performance by the gifted young cellist Natalie Clein on 19 April 2012; her programme which combines solo suites by Bach with two of the great Russian cello sonatas by Rachmaninov and Prokofiev.
