Local Produce
Eating local is easy in Jersey. St Helier's Central Market, a Victorian gem with maroon ironwork, canopied roof and traditional stalls ranged around an elegant fountain, offers a cornucopia of island produce. Jersey Royals are a spring treat, but even in winter, half-a-dozen types of Genuine Jersey potatoes are available, as well as leeks, carrots, apples, squashes and bouquets of fragrant herbs.
For all thing piscatory, head for the nearby Fish Market. Gleaming fresh stalls smelling of the sea are stacked with skate, bass, brill and mackerel. But the speciality here is shellfish - piles of oysters, mussels and scallops in their shells, and lobsters, with their sweet, white meat.
What you see on ice at the fishmongers is on menus all over the island. And when it comes to sweet treats, what else but an ice-cream? It's not just a summer treat here. Jersey cows are famous the world over for the richness of their milk, and Jersey Dairy flavours range from vanilla and banoffee to Montego Mamba, a classic rum and raisin combo.
