Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club

In 1966 Denize Le Pennec became the first Channel Islander to swim the 21 mile stretch of the Straits of Dover. After a 21 hour ordeal, she came ashore badly stung by jellyfish, her eyes almost closed, not having had the aid of swimming goggles, and battered by wind and sickening oily waves. Three years later, she became the first person to swim around Jersey’s 41 mile coastline. From her success grew the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club.
 
Founded in 1974 by a group of enthusiasts, this small competitive club is well organised and friendly. Members include several Channel swimmers, as well as youngsters learning the ropes in Jersey’s unspoilt waters. Some swim for leisure, others are in training for round-Island and Channel swims. The club meets weekly between April and October depending on the water temperature.
