Gardens & Floral

Jersey is an island of flowers – the temperate climate, long hours of sunshine and rich soil make it a gardener’s paradise. Aside from attractions such as the nine acres of pure perfume that make up the fragrant Lavender Farm and the award-winning and awe-inspiring Eric Young Orchid Foundation, there are also a number of stunning private gardens, which are opened several times a year to the public, allowing visitors an exclusive look behind the scenes. Jersey’s capital St Helier has also won two Britain in Bloom prizes in 2001: the Large Town award and also the Permanent Landscape award.

There are more than 10 festivals each year on Jersey dedicated to every aspect of the island’s environment, from two “Wild Weeks” which allow visitors a closer look at some of Jersey’s stunning natural habitats to spring flower festivals and the world famous Jersey Battle of Flowers.

The renowned Garden Festival takes places every July and draws horticultural experts from around Europe and consists of open gardens, talks, demonstrations and guided walks.

Description

Samares Manor is a beautiful house, dating in part to Norman times, surrounded by exceptional gardens originally constructed in the 1920s by Sir James Knott. He had a special enthusiasm for the Orient, and recognised that the environmental conditions of manor grounds offered potential for growing plants from all over the world. The Japanese Garden, rock and water gardens, formal gardens, large ponds with islands and camellia plantations are the result of his passion. In recent years, the survival of this unique horticultural site has required a massive programme of restoration, development and diversification, including the creation of the internationally renowned herb garden - the work of garden designer and author, John Brookes. Talks on herbs and their uses take place each week day and there is a plant trail and activities for children. Current projects include the recently designed exotics garden which contains many exuberant plants, the hot garden of Mediterranean style, and the introduction of field walks through areas set aside for wild flowers. The manor's picturesque Victorian courtyard is the home of the Jersey Rural Life and Carriage museum; it contains a unique collection of vehicles and exhibits and is open to the public each day at no extra charge. Visitors can discover the history of the Manor on an informative guided tour every day except Sunday.
