Green Tourism Scheme
Jersey Tourism is joining forces with the Green Tourism Business Scheme in 2008 to run a pilot study and, as a result of a presentation by Andrea Nicholas from GBTS at Jersey Tourism’s industry event in November, 22 local businesses have signed up to take part.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) is an environmental accreditation scheme for tourism businesses. It was launched in the UK in 1997 and provides marketing, certification and advisory assistance to quality graded tourism businesses.
The value of ‘Green’ grading for local tourism businesses is:
- to establish how well you are managing your business against industry benchmarks and to help establish potential cost savings and environmental benefits
- help market tourism hotels and attractions as environmentally responsible businesses
The scheme has three levels of award:
• Bronze – Good basic environmental practice
• Silver - Very good environmental practice
• Gold - Excellence in environmental practice
Jersey led the field in green initiatives back in 1997 when it became the first ‘Green Globe’ destination in the world – this was the culmination of a two-year initiative which saw the introduction of green lanes, cycle networks, interpretation, establishment of Sites of Special Interest and a host of other eco friendly initiatives.
