Durrell has kept western lowland gorillas since 1959 – the year it opened. The first to arrive was two-year-old female N’pongo.

Situated in 32 acres of beautiful park and farmland, Durrell’s headquarters in Jersey is the hub of the Trust’s activities and a ‘window’ to the work of Durrell around the world, where visitors get the opportunity to see some of the planet’s most endangered species.

Bluey the poison dart frog is a striking little amphibian, and as his name suggests, is both blue and poisonous!

Durrell has kept Sumatran orangutans since 1968 and between 1963 to 1990, also bred the Bornean species. Over the years, 7 valuable babies have been born here and some are now at other zoos contributing to the breeding programme for their species.

Captive breeding trials began in 1992, when a pair of wild-caught Lesser Antillean iguanas came to Jersey from the island of Dominica.

The Organic Farm where staff, students and volunteers get involved with both the planting and harvesting of crops for the animals using organic farming methods.
