Open Gardens 2012

Throughout the year visitors will have the opportunity to get behind the gates of some of the very best private gardens in Jersey, rarely accessible to the public. All proceeds raised are donated to charity.

April

‘Les Chasses’, La Rue des Chasses , St John
Sunday 15th April, 14:00 – 17:00

Hidden deep in the St John's countryside Les Chasses itself consists of a lovely old granite house of uncertain date joined to a mid 18th century house and along with the garden has undergone a large amount of restoration work in recent years. The garden is planted with many camellias & there are walks around ponds and through woodland. There are also stables and a dressage ring where dressage display to music will take place during the afternoon. All proceeds are donated to JAYF.

‘Les Jardins’, La Rue de la Haye du Puits, Grouville
Sunday 22nd April, 14:00 – 17:00

An informal family garden which last opened over ten years ago , Les Jardins was laid out in the 1930s and benefits today from many mature trees and shrubs . Camellias, rhododendrons and magnolias flourish in natural and wild-life friendly woodland planting. All proceeds donated to JAYF.

‘Broadlands’, Princes Tower Road, La Hougue Bie, Grouville
Sunday 13th May, 14:00 – 17:00

This garden has not opened since 1996.  A series of gardens, each surrounded by walls or hedges surrounds this 19th Century house and was laid out over 20 years ago by the late Vernon Russell Smith.  There is a Mediterranean style garden, orchard and fruit areas as well as lawns, herbaceous borders, indigenous and specie trees, water lily clad pond and fountain. All proceeds donated to Grouville Church.

Admission: £3.00. Directions: Just behind La Hougue Bie on the main road.

‘Les Aix’, La Rue des Aix, St Peter
Sunday 27th May, 14:00 – 17:00

A medium to large garden surrounding a Jersey granite house of sufficient age to have 13th Century features.  The garden includes a cider orchard of 58 trees, 10 varieties; a maze of Yew and Box, symbolising an artist’s palette; an avenue of Hellebores and nut trees and then various ‘room’ type gardens planted with shrubs, herbaceous planting including old roses, Camellias, Penstemons, etc.  There is also a vegetable garden and a sunken garden. All proceeds donated to JAYF.

‘Lande A Geon’, Le Vieux Beaumont, St Peter
Sunday 10th June, 14:00 – 17:00

Facing south, the garden at ‘Lande A Geon’ has been landscaped with a series of Terraces and overlooks the magnificent St Aubin’s Bay. There are many fine mature trees to admire including oaks, firs, acacias, a cercis siliquestrum (Judas tree) as well as a cornus macrophylla. In addition, there are also a large number of camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas. The most recently developed area has a Mediterranean theme and contains a dry garden and bananas, gingers and a collection of assorted bamboos. All proceeds donated to Jersey Hospice Care.

Admission: £3.00. Directions: Up Old Beaumont Hill next to the cannon and almost at the top on your left.

‘Domaine des Vaux’, La Rue de Bas, St Lawrence
Sunday 17th June, 14:00 - 17:00

Extended by the present owner Marcus Binney CBE and his wife Anne the property now covers some 20 vergees of gardens and woodland . The valley is planted with many Camellias & native & specie trees including Magnolias, Cercis, Taxodium distichum, Parrotia persica, Eucalyptus & Cornus Kousa. Above & beyond the terrace which has a lovely fountain with a sculpture of  a Boy on a Dolphin, is a tiered garden featuring gold and silver borders.
All proceeds donated to JAYF. 

Admission: £3.00. Directions: Almost a U-turn right before St Lawrence Church into Rue de Bas, entrance down road on left.

‘Gracelands’, La Rue de la Croiserie, Trinity
Sunday 24th June, 14:00 - 17:00

Extensive restoration work has been carried out in this garden over the past few years. Set in almost 3 acres, long sweeping & curving lawns are planted with a stunning combination of trees and Island beds and the herbaceous borders are now filled with many mature & new shrubs and perennials. Roses and honeysuckle scramble over the many bowers and seating areas abound to allow one to enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of this beautiful garden - its hard to believe that you are only a few minutes drive from St Helier! All proceeds donated to JAYF.

‘Villa Devereux’, La Route Orange, St Brelade
Sunday 1st July, 14:00-17:00

This four-acre garden, with a wonderful view over St Brelade’s Bay, consists mainly of undulating lawns interspersed with specimen trees such as Hornbeam, Metasequoia, Cherries, Ginko and Magnolias.  A large tree sculpture is a remnant from the Great Storm of 1987, whilst other sculptures have been created by Walenty Pytel, John Skelton and George Kowzan.  To either side of the house are Japanese style gardens featuring Acers, Azaleas and a “Deer Scarer” over a water trough.  There are also many other interesting plants to be seen including many varieties of Camellias and Heathers. Today, you may also enjoy the Ikebana exhibition, with large displays around the garden. All proceeds donated to JAYF.

‘Sion Hall Farm’, La Rue St Thomas, St Saviour
Sunday 15th July, 14:00 - 17:00

The garden around Sion Hall Farm itself dates from the late 1970s whilst the steep bank was landscaped & planted with indigenous trees c1987 & the main garden in the shallow valley was a Millennium / Retirement project by the owners. This is an all seasons garden with something in flower every month of the year including Camellias , Viburnums , Almonds , Cherry , Hydrangeas, Clerodendron , Eucryphias ,Chimonanthus and the unusual Wollemi Palm & Ostrya. All proceeds donated to JAYF.

‘St John’s Manor’, La Neuf Chemin, St John
Sunday 12th August, 14:00-17:00

This imposing Manor with its own consecrated chapel stands in 10 acres of carefully tended gardens, 40 acres of farmland and surrounding woodlands.  The present owner has carried out extensive landscaping to best show the main features; the lake, the Japanese garden, stream and walkways.All proceeds donated to JAYF.
