About Jersey

Practical Information

Money Matters

Currency

Although Jersey has its own coins and notes, all trade in Jersey is conducted in Pounds Sterling. All major debit and credit cards are widely accepted with 'Chip and Pin' the most common form of card payment. English money can be freely used, as can UK cheques supported by a banker's card. Most credit cards are accepted throughout the island using 'Chip and Pin' transactions. Euros are accepted in a limited number of outlets. All banks exchange currency and there are a number of Bureaux de Change.

Holidays and opening hours

Jersey has the same public holidays as the UK mainland, with an additional day's holiday on 9 May to mark Liberation Day.

Pubs and shops

At the discretion of the proprietor, public bars are open to persons over 18 between the following hours:

  • Weekdays 9am - 11pm
  • Sundays 11am - 11pm

The Licensing Assembly may also permit children under the age of 18 in public bars up to 9pm if accompanied by an adult.

The markets and some shops are closed on Thursday afternoons - otherwise normal shopping hours apply (9am - 5.30pm). During the summer months a number of shops are open in the evenings. High Street shops are closed on Sunday.

Banks

Banks normally keep the same hours as those in the UK, and some open Saturday mornings. Building societies' facilities are restricted. There are Link card machines in St Helier, Red Houses and St Saviour, but no counter service is available. Cash transactions through building societies differ from those in the UK and Ireland - please check with your society before departure.

Post offices

The Main Post Office is in Broad Street, St Helier, with sub-post offices located throughout the Island. Jersey postage stamps must be used on all mail sent from Jersey.

UK pensions

Whilst on holiday in Jersey it is possible to collect two weeks' worth of your pension, but only within a 12-month period and provided that the pension book indicates Group 13 membership. Pensions can be received at the Main Post Office in Broad Street, St Helier. For further information, please contact the Post Office on +44 (0)1534 616616.

Casinos

At the present time there are no casinos in the Island, as they are prohibited by existing gambling laws. However, the matter is being addressed and it may be that casino licences will be available in the future.
