The Island

Learning in Jersey

Jersey is the perfect place to combine learning and pleasure - whether it's improving your casting skills for deep sea fish, trying your hand at surfing or taking a cookery course. You could even learn a language during your stay.

English language schools

If English is not your native tongue, why not spend a fun yet productive week or two at an English language school on the Island? Below are details of two such schools, which offer a range of courses from beginner level to advanced. These schools can also arrange accommodation with English-speaking host families, plus social and recreational outings.

St Brelade's College

Established in 1978, this is a privately-run school recognised by the British Council and a member of ARELS. Tuition is in small groups (of up to eight for adults and 12 for teenagers) and the academic programme is combined with daily excursions, sports and evening social activities. Accommodation is with local host families and includes free daily transport to and from school. St Brelade's College offers:

  • Intensive group courses, combination courses and private tuition for adults
  • Holiday courses for teenagers (including a wide variety of sports options)
  • Preparation for Cambridge examinations

The school is close to St Aubin, famous for its pubs, hotels and restaurants and just a 10-minute drive from Jersey's capital, St Helier.

Highlands College – ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

We run a large variety of English courses throughout the year. Our courses are mostly in the evening and at weekends for people of all levels of English who live and work in Jersey taught by a highly experienced team of TESOL qualified tutors:

ESOL Skills for Life Courses

Our ESOL Skills for Life courses are aimed at people living and working in Jersey who need English to ‘survive’ and function in an English-speaking environment. These courses start at total beginners level and progress to an Intermediate level of English. Students are offered the possibility of taking Cambridge Skills for Life examinations at the end of their course.

Cambridge Mainsuite Courses

We also offer the traditional EFL language courses such as Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET), Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE), Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) and Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) which are all widely recognised internationally.

Cambridge Business Courses and the International Certificate in Financial English (and in-house CPD programmes)

We run Cambridge Business English (BEC) courses and the International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) which focus on the learning of English in a professional and business context. These are internationally recognised business qualifications which are very popular as a means of gauging the language level of potential employees. We organise in-house tailored courses for Jersey employers and financial institutions on Continuous Professional Development programmes for their staff needing specialist English for Business.

ESOL Assessments

Every student joining our ESOL courses is asked to attend an ESOL assessment which is necessary to ensure that they are advised on the English course most appropriate to them. These 1:1 consultations take place regularly and are free of charge. Students need to telephone to book an appointment.
