Food and craft

The cycling will, of course, be the main attraction when the Tour de Bretagne comes to the Island, but on Sunday 25 April, there will be another reason for going out to view the race.

On Gorey Common – which will be close to the action – a food and craft village will be set up, offering a wide variety of produce to eat and drink and a range of stalls showcasing the work of craftsmen and women.

There will also be live music, including a performance by the Band of the Island of Jersey, street theatre and an appearance of the Jersey Heritage Trust’s Goodwyf, who will be riding a bicycle dating back to the German Occupation.

Food to eat while you soak up the atmosphere will include seafood platters, Jersey ice-cream, milk shakes and smoothies, Jersey Royals, French sausages, Genuine Jersey sausages, barbecued oysters, crêpes, panninis, Swedish specialities, pastries, jams and chutneys, cakes, hot-dogs, sandwiches, soup and coffee.

A hog roast, meanwhile, is bound to capture attention as well as sending out enticing aromas.

The craft stalls will feature, among other things, jewellery, knitted goods, hand-made textiles, pottery, children’s ceramics, and photographic arts.

Free Bus Travel to Stage 1

Connex BusTransport and Technical Services (TTS) and Connex Transport Jersey Ltd will be running a ‘free bus day’ on Sunday 25 April 2010 to encourage more people to view bus travel as a good alternative to taking the car. The initiative has also been planned to coincide with Stage 1 of the Tour de Bretagne.

Free buses to the cycle race area in Gorey will ensure that you see the race without worrying about finding parking.  The entire Island bus network, including the myExplorer services, will be free that day so it won’t just be cycling enthusiasts who will benefit.

Professional cyclistsConnex Managing Director Eric Le Roux added: ‘We are very excited about this opportunity. We are aware that there are several events taking place on 25 April – the Tour de Bretagne cycle race at Gorey and the Connex RCIYC Spring Regatta in St Aubin’s Bay – being two of them. We are very hopeful that the free bus day will provide extra support to these events.’

For timetable information, please visit www.mybus.je. Route diversions and timetables for Tour de Bretagne will be published in a supplement in the JEP on 21 April and will also be made available on these pages.

Local organisers involved in the Tour de Bretagne professional cycle race are appealing for volunteer stewards to oversee the two-day Jersey section which takes place on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 April.

Nearly 100 stewards will be needed to cover the event. On the morning of the races the volunteers will be provided with a packed lunch, yellow safety bib and a map of the junction they will be manning.

Once checked in they will be taken by coach to their junction by a section leader who will make sure that they have all the stewards' mobile numbers.

After the race, volunteers will be picked up by coach.

If potential stewards need further tempting, then how about the chance to stand on some of the best vantage points to see the race, to see professional cyclists in action and the chance to feel the atmosphere close up.

Anyone interested in voluteering can fill out an application form (see above) or call 07797 717565.

Once an application form has been received, the stewards will get a briefing paper through the post with all the details they will need.
