Description

Discover the world of the first people who lived in Jersey. Enter the exhibition through a mammoth bone hut and step back in time a quarter of a million years to when Jersey was an outcrop of rock in a vast frozen landscape, frequented by herds of woolly mammoth and rhinoceros. Meet the mammoth hunters. What did they look like? Where did they come from? How did they live and hunt for food? Find out how archaeologists have pieced together clues from fragments of bone, skulls and primitive tools to help us understand our early ancestors. The exhibition features some of the surviving woolly mammoth and rhinoceros bones and flint tools found at the internationally important site of La Cotte de St Brelade. The Mammoth Hunters is a family focused exhibition full of adventure, clues and mystery. Associated programme of talks, workshops, school projects and events.

Description

Take a walk on the sea-bed. Explore gullies, cross sand bars and rock pools to Seymour Tower and discover Jersey’s very own wilderness area in the company of a local guide. Revel in the stillness and expanse of an area that is covered twice a day by some of the highest tides in the world (40ft). Walk up to 2 miles offshore. Learn about the fishing history of the area, or just enjoy the chance to be in a wild and remote place. The area is full of wildlife and has a rich maritime history. It is a UNESCO designated Ramsar wetlands site. Reservation is essential as all walks are in small groups. It is only possible to walk to Seymour Tower when there are very low tides. Visit the website for the dates of all walks and other options. For your safety only walk offshore unaccompanied if you have knowledge of the area and its tides. 1¼ miles offshore, Icho tower is a different experience from the walk to Seymour tower. Surrounded by reefs walk through the gullies catching glimpses of the wider panoramas that suddenly open up to reveal a mass of offshore reefs and sand bars. At the tower almost all of the south coast of Jersey is visible. Perhaps see people low water fishing for Lobsters, Prawns and even the famous Ormer. Reservation is essential as all walks are in small groups. It is only possible to walk to Icho Tower when there are very low tides. Visit the the website for the dates of all walks and other options.
