There is no doubt that Jersey’s sailing calendar is as packed as any, with all three of the island’s clubs busy providing well-planned and wide ranging sailing activities for local and visiting sailors alike. But, once a year, the clubs combine their efforts and expertise to produce the Jersey Regatta, the island’s sailing pièce de résistance.
Over the years, this showpiece event’s reputation has spread far and wide to make it, arguably, the major attraction in Channel Islands waters. It is, indeed, the biggest mixed-fleet regatta, providing three days of great racing for sports boat, cruiser/racer, quarter tonner, dayboat, dinghy and sport catamaran classes. Whilst a strong competitive element ensures excellent racing, the emphasis is on combining the excitement of cut-and-thrust racing with an over-riding ethos of fun and friendly rivalry aimed at encouraging all to participate.
The Brewin Dolphin 11th Jersey Regatta opens with a round-the-island race, a fantastic way to view this stunning location.
Subsequently, all racing for the sports boat, cruiser/racer and quarter tonner classes takes place off the south coast whilst the dayboat, dinghy and sport catamaran classes race over Olympic courses laid in the beautiful confines of St Aubin’s Bay. A fun-packed social programme, based in the Royal Channel Islands and St Helier Yacht Clubs, complements each day’s racing, with the Saturday Regatta Party providing a great opportunity for visitors to coax a little local knowledge out of their Jersey counterparts.
With a full programme of races for all classes, there are prizes galore to be presented at the closing Gala Prize-Giving on the Sunday evening, a sparkling occasion that provides a fitting end to this outstanding sailing extravaganza. Berthing charges? There are none. Jersey Harbours provides complimentary berthing for all competitors throughout the Regatta.
