Jersey Festival of Words 2019

Bring your imagination out to play

Now in its fifth year, Jersey Festival of Words is a five day literary event from 25 to 29 September that aims to promote a love of the written and spoken word across the community and in a variety of styles and setting. Tickets for all events will be available for purchase from the end of July.

There’s something for everyone

With over fifty events featuring talks, performances and readings from a host of visiting and local writers, there really is something for all tastes and interests. From An Evening with Michael Parkinson to a children’s cookery class with recipe blogger Emily Leary; from a poetry reading with Frieda Hughes to a Mermaid and Pirate Mash-Up with children’s authors Adam and Charlotte Guillan, the festival’s programme is as diverse as it is varied. Our main festival venues are Jersey Opera House, Jersey Arts Centre and Jersey Library (all located in the centre of St Helier) which means you’re never too far away from the next event.

Immerse yourself in the wonders of the sea

This year’s Jersey Festival of Words sees us welcoming Professor Alex Rogers, who recently served as a scientific consultant on the BBC’s Blue Planet II series. Interviewed by local ocean campaigner Matt Porteous professor Rogers will be discussing his new book The Deep, taking us on an epic and utterly unforgettable voyage to an alien world, and bringing us right to the edge of what is known about our oceans today. We also look forward to welcoming Raynor Winn, whose Sunday Times bestseller The Salt Path charts her and her husband’s 630-mile sea-swept trail from Somerset to Dorset, via Devon and Cornwall.

Enjoy sports-themed events for active readers

With a nod to our friends over at the Super League Triathlon (running at the same time as Festival of Words), we’re delighted be welcoming BBC presenter Lousie Minchin to the Opera House to discuss her book Dare to Tri, which charts her journey from the breakfast show couch to team GB triathlon runner. Fans of the beautiful game are invited to An Evening with Sir Michael Parkinson, in which the legendary TV host will be discussing his recent George Best memoir, while sports lawyer Daniel Geey will be presenting Done Deal: An Insider's Guide to Player Contracts, Million-Pound Transfers and Premier League Big Business.

Engage with a truly unique island culture

As ever the Festival of Words features a host of Jersey-based writers, along with opportunities for you to engage with various aspects of island culture. Those with an interest in the local language Jèrriais are invited to join local band Badlabecques for a singing workshop, while youngsters can say ‘’bouônjour’ to the Gruffalo at the launch of a Jèrriais version of the famous children’s book. Local collective La Poet’tie will be running a poetry slam, and there will also be a polyglot creative writing course for speakers of English, French or Portuguese.
