Read our insider's guide to Jersey in autumn. John Garton, CEO of Genuine Jersey, shares his tips on the best way to spend a weekend in Jersey, from where to get the freshest catch of the day to the perfect place to grab a sundowner.

Why do you love Jersey in autumn?

The children have gone back to school and the island is quieter after the busy summer months. This all makes autumn the perfect time of year to enjoy walks on the north coast, where you get a dramatic change in colour as the bracken turns to copper, or on one of the smaller beaches where you can find a sheltered spot to relax and breathe in the fresh sea air.

Where do you go for an authentic taste of Jersey?

Jersey has an amazing selection of shellfish on offer and there’s no better place to choose the freshest catch than at the Fresh Fish Company on Victoria Pier. As well as shellfish there’s an awesome selection of local produce, from freshly baked breads to delicious tomatoes – in fact everything one needs to make up a fantastic picnic to enjoy whilst overlooking the sea somewhere.

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend in Jersey?

The island has a vast choice of restaurants, cafés and bars and I like nothing better than meeting friends in one of them - whether it’s Sunday morning breakfast, or one of the busy bars in town on a Friday night where there will often be a live band playing. There’s often an event on where I can catch up with friends, people watch, and enjoy the Jersey vibe.

How do you reconnect and revitalise?

When you’re office based like I am, it’s important to get out and about as much as possible. Just visiting a part of the island you don’t usually go to, checking out a new restaurant or bar, going for a walk on a beach you don’t normally visit, or even selecting fresh seasonal produce from one of the many farm shops or roadside stalls, can be a revitalizing experience.

The island is small enough and safe enough to cycle everywhere so it’s my preferred mode of transport. This time of year is great for cycling as the road conditions are usually quite dry, and if you’re planning a longer ride, it’s not too hot. It’s a great way to see the island.

Sunset or sunrise?

Sunset is a special time in Jersey, especially out west or in some of the northern bays where if you’re in luck the sun drops right into the sea. I like to walk or cycle with fiends before enjoying a sundowner on a coastal terrace. There are lots of places to choose from but my favorite is El Tico in St Ouen’s Bay.

East or west?

West is best - it’s wild in places with the amazing rolling waves of St. Ouen’s Bay, while St. Brelade’s Bay is more civilized, with a great selection of restaurants and bars. It’s so easy to get there by bus from St. Helier too.

Coast or countryside?

It’s got to be coast. The sea is still warm enough in the autumn for swimming as it’s had the whole summer to warm up. It’s a really refreshing way to start an evening before catching up with friends or family to chat the night away.
