A blissful beach
Soft sand, the sounds of seabirds and crashing waves, and the feeling of sunshine on your skin… a beach day in Jersey is a real treat, especially for those book lovers who want to relax on a sun lounger and read for as long as the tide is out. Our beaches are never overcrowded which means you’ll have no trouble picking out the most ideal, peaceful reading spot. Make sure to check tide times before heading to the beach of your choice.

The printing press was introduced to Jersey in the late 1780s, and there is very little surviving Jèrriais literature dating to before this. However, Jersey’s literary tradition can be traced back to the 12th century with Wace, a Jersey-born poet and the first person to reference King Arthur’s ’round table’.

Throughout history, several famous authors have had connections to Jersey. The great French writer, Victor Hugo, was exiled from France to Jersey in 1852. He spent three years on the island, during which time he wrote the series of poems, Les Châtiments.
Renowned conservationist and naturalist, Gerald Durrell, who founded Jersey Zoo in the late 1950s, wrote many books over the years. One of his best-loved works is ‘My Family and Other Animals’, an autobiographical account of his childhood in Corfu.

If you run out of reading material during your holiday, there’s no need to panic! You’ll find Waterstones and WHSmith in St. Helier alongside a selection of shops selling second hand or antique books.
On your travels around the island, keep an eye out for books written by fabulous local authors like Sophie Cousens, Erren Michaels and Caroline Lea. Some of their stories are set in Jersey, making them a thoughtful souvenir for the book lover in your life, or a literary memento for yourself.
