Skipton Open Studios runs over two weekends - the last weekend in June and the first weekend in July and sees local artists open their creative spaces, and pop-up in unusual locations, for the public to visit for free! We’ve teamed up with ArtHouse Jersey Producer Alice Bravery who shares with us some reasons why you HAVE to visit Skipton Open Studios in 2018!

Every single studio or creative space is so individual, and they’re not always normally open to the public. It’s not every day that you get to be a fly-on-the-wall and see works in progress, watch demonstrations, and feel inspired by these amazing spaces that islanders have taken the time to create their work in. Many artists fill their spaces with inspiration to inform their work, and so visiting can often be like wandering around a little museum of interesting objects and items! 

Meet the artists

It’s a great excuse to check out a new venue or space.

This year we have a lot of spaces being used as venues for Open Studios that aren’t normally open to the public, or that are being used for the first time. If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of a traditional Jersey watermill looks like, now’s your chance as several artists will be using Le Moulin de Quétivel in St. Peter to show new work as a temporary exhibition space. Ian Roll’s will also be opening his new gallery at the recently restored Foot Building on Pitt Street for the first time.

Skipton Open Studios works hard to offer something for everyone.

If you’re a 'Culture Vulture', creatively curious or looking for a fun afternoon out with your friends, family or on your own, then Skipton Open Studios is absolutely for you. Many people try and visit all of the studios on the list, as so many different types of artists involved, you may go into one studio and think it’s not quite for you or to your taste, then walk to the next one and love it. For families, there is also a lot to do, many of the artists have child friendly workshops for your kids to have a go at.

It’s not just about looking at artwork.

This year it’s not just about the studios. We’ve grown the programme to feature a broad variety of unique events for the wider public. We are strong believers that art is for everyone, and we want to see people who wouldn’t typically enter arts spaces cross the threshold and have a go.
